Quinquagesima Sunday
This sermon explores the inseparable bond between love and trust. In marriage, couples trust one another deeply because love creates that trust. When betrayal breaks trust, love withers. Yet God restores broken trust through grace. On Quinquagesima Sunday, the final Sunday before Lent, the Church turns to 1 Corinthians 13, the great chapter on charity. St. Paul teaches that spiritual gifts, sacrifice, and even martyrdom mean nothing without love. True charity suffers long, rejoices in truth, bears all things, and never fails. This divine love, agape, comes from God and produces real faith. Scripture presents God’s covenant as a marriage, especially in Hosea, where God pursues His unfaithful bride. God loved us while we were sinners and awakened our faith through His love. Lent calls us to renew that love, trust Him fully, and grow in faithful obedience.
