Passion Sunday

Mar 22, 2026    The Most Rev. Dr. Ray Sutton

This homily for Passion Sunday explains why the Church veils the crosses before Easter. The preacher connects this practice to the veil in the Temple that separated the Holy of Holies from the people. That veil showed how sin blocked access to God. At the moment of Christ’s death the veil tore apart and opened the way into God’s presence through His sacrifice. The cross now stands as the path to communion with God. The sermon also traces how Christians expressed this truth through church design such as screens rails and altar veils. Each Eucharist lifts the veil again as Christ gives Himself to His people. The veiled crosses remind believers of sin yet also proclaim that Christ removed the barrier and invites them to draw near with faith
